The Auditor's Office usually requests that the couple come in person to the office because their signature must be notarized on the application.  An application will be sent to them if they are not able to come into our office which they can complete and then sign before a notary. The office hours are Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and will need to bring a piece of identification and provide their social security number at the time of application.  Applicants who are 17 must have a legal parent or guardian also sign on the application.  Any applicant under the age of 17 must go before the courts to receive permission to get married.

The fee for a marriage license is $46.00 in Stevens County.  There is a 3 day waiting period in the State of Washington from the application date until the license is issued, and once issued the license is valid for 60 days in the State of Washington.  The license can not used outside of Washington State, however it does not matter which county the couple applies for the license, they are valid through out the State of Washington. If a couple is from out of the area, they can apply for the license in the county that is closest to them if that is more convenient.  Fees are different from county to county, so they would want to contact the County Auditor’s office in their home county for that information.    Completed marriage certificates are filed in the county that issued the license.Who may solemnize a marriage: RCW 26.04.050 – The following named officers and persons, active or retired, are hereby authorized to solemnize to wit: Justices of the supreme court, judges of the court of appeal, judges of the superior court, court commissioners, court of appeals commissioners, superior court commissioners, any regularly licensed or ordained minister of any priest of any church or religious denomination, and judges of courts of limited jurisdiction as defined in RCW 3.02.010.All Washington State statutes are available on line at: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/ through the Washington State Legislature.  Marriage License information can be found under Title 26 Marriage.
